When Princess Diana and Prince Charles formally announced their divorce, it shocked the world. At the time, The New York Times wrote that the shift would “irrevocably” alter Diana’s life, and a large portion of that change had to do with her finances. The newspaper reported that Charles “formally declared” that he would cease paying Diana’s bills.
“I think Diana finally realised that could give her all the things I could not,” wrote the doctor. In a statement read at the inquest into her death Hasnat Khan contradicted previous testimony about their break-up, which several witnesses had attributed to his desire to continue his career in anonimity. Early on in the marriage, the “No Country for Old Men” star was arrested for domestic battery. “Charles got into the habit of dropping in on her at Kensington Palace and they would have tea and a sort of rueful exchange,” Brown shared. “They even had some laughs together.” So what contributed to their improving relationship? Things between them in the headlines had quelled, their children were getting older, and Diana had finally come to terms with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Diana was offered a security detail after her divorce was finalized, but she refused it, as she reportedly thought that the officers near her were reporting her actions to Charles . That was a big change for Diana, as typically royal family members are afforded large budgets for traveling — so much so that they can afford to stay in exquisite hotels in amazing locations. Diana also faced other travel limitations, and unless she was venturing on private vacation, Queen Elizabeth and the Foreign Office had to give their consent before she could leave the country. One of the first shared assets that gets discussed in divorce proceedings is the house — who gets to keep it, who moves out, and how long there is before selling becomes an unavoidable consequence? Well luckily for Princess Diana, being forced out of her residence of Kensington Palace was never on the table (after all, it’s been in the royal family for ogles of years). Apparently, Prince Charles did not take the news about Diana’s settlement very well.
Diana later deemed the wedding the “worst day of my life.”
“Yes, I adored him. Yes, I was in love with him. But I was very let down,” she said of Hewitt’s involvement in the publication of the book. Princess Diana’s sister, Sarah, dated Prince Charles briefly in the late ’70s and was the one to introduce the future royal couple. After packing on the PDA in the January 2016 “Pillowtalk” music video, the duo made their red carpet debut at the Met Gala that May. To further complicate things, Dodi apparently broke off an engagement with former model Kelly Fisher to be with Diana. Two days before their wedding, as reported byThe Sun, Dodi broke up with her by telephone, around the same time that the picture of him and Diana made the news. Fisher appeared on the news with a gigantic engagement ring, announcing that she was suing Dodi for $500,000 because she gave up her career for him.
The two-year relationship stayed relatively secret, but the doctor ended it in anticipation of the media attention. The billionaire entrepreneur was 20 years her senior, but became enamored with Diana after meeting her at a 1994 black-tie dinner. According to the Daily Mail, he set her flowers every week for three years, Forstman told a New York reporter that he reluctantly ended the romance to reunite with his longtime girlfriend, Deborah Hagerty. As the other half of “Squidgygate,” the former-car salesman is most remembered for his pet name for the Princess, which he used in a pre-1990 phone call over 10 times. After British tabloids got ahold of their intimate conversations in 1992, Diana purportedly ended the relationship. According to Biography, Diana’s first fell for her married bodyguard in 1985, but palace rumors led to his dismissal a year later.
August 1981: Prince Charles and Princess Diana go on their honeymoon
“Trump at the time that it happened said that Kate only had herself to blame and shouldn’t have been sunbathing topless, even though she was in privacy,” Royston said. “She was in a kind of walled-off chateau. The only way the photographer managed to get the pictures was by standing on a hill hundreds of meters away. And using a very, very powerful zoom lens which was able to see over the wall because of the hill.” An estimated 2,000 guests will pour into Westminster Abbey’s pews on May 6, while 8,251 people attended Elizabeth’s. And the service has been cut down to 60 minutes — a third of the Queen’s three-hour coronation in 1953.
Earlier that day, Charles’ tell-all documentary had aired, and he had finally admitted to his infidelity. As such, Diana busted out the “revenge dress” from her closet, matched it with a stunning pearl choker, and dazzled in front of the cameras. “We call it the ‘revenge dress’ she wore it the same evening Prince Charles confessed to his adultery with Camilla,” Kerry Taylor, who auctioned some of Diana’s clothing, explained. “While some would have been like, ‘I can’t face it this evening,’ Diana went out in that dress looking drop-dead gorgeous. She made a big statement.”
As reported by Elle, in the early 1980s, she agreed to let Diana represent the royal family at an important event. Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco, passed away in 1982 and Diana attended the event on behalf of the Queen. It would be fair to say that Diana knew what the royal family was like from a young age, and that she had seen how things worked.
While the Grammy-winning songstress has been fairly low-key about her dating life, she’s still managed to make headlines with her relationships. Since her album Born to Die propelled her to fame in 2012, Del Rey has been linked to a number of creatives, from musicians Soulmate to photographers. “I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship over four years like that,” Malik said at the time. Malik and British singer Rebecca Ferguson also met on The X Factor and began dating during the show’s tour in 2011.
The couple separated in 1992 and their divorce was finalized just one year before Diana’s death on Aug. 31, 1997, when she was tragically killed in a car crash. Instead, Diana said her vows, but later said it was the “worst day of life” to her friend and voice coach, Peter Settelen. “If I could write my own script I would have my husband go away with and never come back,” she said in a recording, which was released as part of a Channel 4 documentary. They married on February 1, 1986, but later divorced in 2000 after it was reported that Naess had another child with a woman in Norway. According to Diana’s wedding day makeup artist, Barbara Daly, the bride spilled Quelques Fleurs perfume on her dress while attempting to daub the scent onto her wrists. To hide the stain, Daly advised the young princess to hold the spot on her dress as if lifting it to avoid stepping on the train.
Scandal broke in early 1993 when private telephone conversations between the prince and his mistress were leaked to the press. The Mirror published a transcript of an incredibly personal conversation, which had been secretly recorded in 1989 while Charles and Camilla were both still married. Subsequently, Camilla filed for divorce from Andrew in January 1995, while Charles and Diana finalized their divorce in August 1996. Charles remained close with Camilla after briefly dating her in the early ’70s. When Charles returned to the Royal Navy, his relationship with Camilla had reportedly cooled. Per People, “Although the smitten prince courted her for six months, he failed to propose before returning to sea in February 1973.” In 1973, Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles, but her love for the prince never fully died.
The decision made “in the interests of sustainability and efficiency” certainly indicates the coronation will look and feel different to the previous one. In 1980, the duchy of Cornwall , purchased Highgrove House, near Tetbury in Gloucestershire, as a country home for the Prince of Wales. The estate was only 11 miles away from Bolehyde Manor, Camilla and Andrew’s home in Wiltshire. The purchase of the estate was an investment in his future, as Charles wanted nothing more than a “normal family life,” according to Lady Mountbatten.
Charles and Diana’s “fairytale” 1981 wedding not only eclipsed both previously televised royal nuptials but also outperformed her sons’ later ceremonies. A record-breaking 750 million viewers—including 28.4 million in Great Britain, where July 29 was declared a national holiday—watched the ceremony on television. Another 600,000 people poured into the streets of London, eager to catch a glimpse of the newlyweds’ carriage procession. Under pressure to settle down after years of playing the field (including with on-again, off-again lover Camilla), the prince invited Diana to spend a weekend at his family’s holiday estate, Balmoral. During this “audition,” in the words of Vanity Fair’s Julie Miller, Charles’ relatives deemed the demure yet lively young woman an ideal candidate for marriage.
The following month, Hadid confirmed they were back together as she posted a Valentine’s Day tribute to Malik. Paparazzi snapped away as the two lovebirds engaged in PDA before taking off on the silver fox’s motorcycle. Weeks after she legally pulled the plug on her four-year marriage, the mother of onestarted hanging out with Hollywood hunk Brad Pitt. She and movie producer Sebastian Bear-McClard shocked the world when they secretly tied the knotat a New York City courthouse in February 2018, just two weeks after they were spotted together for the first time. Other members of the royal family who have come under more explicit criticism from Trump are Harry and Meghan Markle, whom he has spoken about on a number of occasions.
