My name is Georgina Des-Bordes. I am a 20-year-old high school graduate and the fourth daughter in my family. I joined the second cohort of STAR Alternative Access Program by STAR Women and I am currently pursuing a 3year apprenticeship in fashion as part of that program.
The first component of the program, which was held at the STAR Women hub, was designed to develop skills in entrepreneurship, leadership, digital literacy, reading, and spiritual growth.
The leadership sessions were truly impactful and inspiring. They helped me build my confidence and understand the importance of personal values. Creating my vision board was a powerful exercise; it allowed me to visualize my future and set concrete goals. I also learned to craft a personal elevator pitch. I will never forget how I became very much aware that as I am liberated from my own fears, my presence automatically liberates others.
The entrepreneurship sessions were equally enriching. I learned how to prepare a business plan and gained practical insights on starting a business. One of the most valuable takeaways was the importance of teamwork and learning from others.
The digital literacy sessions were both informative and fun. I improved my skills in Microsoft Excel and discovered useful computer shortcuts, which made me feel more confident in using technology.
At first, the book reading and review sessions seemed challenging. When I began reading Becoming by Michelle Obama, I found it slow, but as I continued, I became deeply inspired. I noticed similarities between Michelle’s family and mine, as well as parallels between her childhood and my own experiences in Ghana. Her story reminds me that whenever I feel inadequate, I can always push forward and remind myself that I am enough.
The spiritual formation sessions have had a profound impact on me. They taught me the importance of patience and faith — to write down my vision and trust that God will bring it to pass in His time. I also learned that it’s okay to have multiple gifts and talents — becoming a multipotentialite is a thing.
One of the most memorable aspects of the program was the strong sense of community. I loved how we supported and encouraged one another, enjoyed daily meals together, reflected during our 20 minutes of silence, and participated in team-building activities and the career clinic. My self-confidence grew tremendously through these experiences.
With my STAR Women training, I am about to be an extraordinary business woman in the fashion world and I am poised to let my light shine so bright just as I have been empowered to be.
